dct:description "<para>Data were collected in 40 study sites distributed along grazing and agricultural gradients in the study area intermittently from August to December 2018. A paired patch study design was adopted in each site, whereby two 50 x 50 m plots were established for bee sampling. We sampled bees using a combination of pan traps and sweep-netting techniques, which have successfully been used for sampling bees in the Kilimanjaro region and other parts of the world. In each plot, four UV-reflecting pan trap clusters (each with yellow, white, and blue) traps were set and left in the field for 48 hours. We also conducted a transect walk with sweep nets to sample bee faunal whereby two researchers were actively collecting bees for two hours per site. The collected bees were temporarily stored in 70% ethanol before dried, pinned and later identified by the taxonomists to species level. Data collection were made possible through the Bee-pollinator Monitoring Project, Tanzania, implemented by the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka, under financial support from the JRS Biodiversity Foundation, USA.</para>" ;

dct:description """<para>Established in 1980, the Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) hosts more than 70,000 preserved plant specimens collected from different eco-geographical regions of Tanzania, including the biodiversity hotspots of the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests. Also, there are few records of the specimens from the United Kingdom, Uganda, Malawi, Kenya and Zambia. These preserved plant specimens belong to more than 350 Families and 2000 Genera of Angiosperms, Gymnosperms, Pteridophytes and Bryophytes. The Herbarium at Lushoto Research Center (LSRC) is the oldest in Tanzania. The Herbarium is composed of specimens previously preserved in the Amani Botanical Garden and later transferred to the Coridon Museum in Kenya and back to Tanzania. The collection at LSRC herbarium was un-digitized, and therefore the preserved data were not widely available to herbarium data users.

This dataset presents a digitized data set of flowering plant specimens from the TAFORI-LSRC herbarium. The data set contains 23,014 plant specimens from more than 1600 genera and 220 families. Information in this dataset was drawn from the labels of preserved specimens and transformed into Darwin core standards. The dataset is crucial in plant monitoring studies and teaching because it holds specimens from different habitats and wide temporal coverage, including those collected in the 18’s during the colonial error.</para>""" ;

dct:title "Synopsis of the distribution of Macroalgae in Tanzania along the western part of the Indian Ocean" ;
dct:description "<para>Macroalgae, also known as seaweeds, are macroscopic, multicellular, marine algae often attached to the ocean floor or hard substratum. They include green (Chlorophyta), red (Rhodophyta), and brown (Phaeophyceae) algae. Macroalgae are essential nursery habitats for fisheries and other marine species and a source of food for marine animals. They play a significant role in capturing carbon and producing oxygen. Macroalgae are currently cultivated in large open ponds or lagoons to yield food, food additives, and phycocolloids used to thicken, solidify, gell, stabilise, emulsify and bind in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and chemical industries. Thus, they are essential for environmental sustainability, the national economy, and livelihood in the World.</para><para>Seaweeds started to gain economic importance in Tanzania as early as the 1930s when the local coastal communities harvested the wild species of Eucheumatoids for export to Europe and the USA. By the 1950s, about 4,000 tons of dry seaweed were exported mainly to the USA, France and Denmark. This trade continued gaining importance, but it collapsed in the 1970s due to the depletion of the wild stock. The collapse prompted researchers at the University of Dar es Salaam to find alternative sources, work that started in the late 1970s to 1980s pioneered by Prof. Keto Mshigeni. The department of Botany curated and stored the seaweed specimens collected from research in its herbarium. Data from these specimens contain valuable information that can support evidence-based decisions on conservation, farming, and industry of macroalgae and other marine species. This valuable resource was locked at the Dar es Salaam Herbarium (DSM) of the University of Dar es Salaam as annotated herbarium sheets for more than four centuries is now openly available for wide use. </para><para>The macroalgal dataset provided here consists of distribution records of 172 species of the Phylum Chlorophyta, Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta of the kingdoms Plantae (80%) and Chromista (20%). Approximately 17% (55) of the records represent the Rhodomelaceae, a large family of filamentous red algae, 9% (30) the Dictyotaceae, a brown agal family and 7% (25) the brown algal family Sargassaceae. Other families in the dataset include Acinetosporaceae, Chordariaceae and Scytosiphonaceae. The dataset covers records collected from different sites in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar along the western part of the Indian Ocean (from Lindi in the south to Tanga in the north, and Unguja, Pemba and Mafia islands). In addition to the collections from Tanzania, the herbarium holds 36 specimens collected from North Carolina, Hawaii and Canada.</para>" ;

dct:title "Occurrence and distribution of invertebrates in temporary wetlands of the Pangani River Basin, northeastern Tanzania" ;
dct:description "<para>Temporary wetlands are aquatic habitats characterized by a recurrent dry phase of varying duration (Williams et al., 2001). They are generally small (< 10 ha in area) and shallow (often < 30 cm) with alternating phases of flooding and drying, and largely autonomous hydrology (Ramsar, 2002). Despite their relatively small size, temporary wetlands harbor unique flora and fauna that are uncommon or absent in permanent aquatic habitats; hence contributing significantly to local and regional biodiversity (Williams et al., 2003; Nicolet et al., 2004; De Meester et al., 2005; Aguilar-Alberola and Mesquita-Joanes, 2011). Regarding their invertebrate fauna, they are often inhabited by a variety of organisms such as large branchiopod species (e.g. Notostraca, Anostraca, Spinicaudata, Laevicaudata, Cyclestherida) and smaller-bodied zooplankton groups like cladocerans, copepods, and rotifers (Brendonck and Williams, 2000; Williams, 2006; Boix et al., 2016). This dataset presents data on the occurrence of freshwater invertebrates in the temporary wetlands of the Pangani River Basin, northeastern Tanzania. The invertebrate occurrence data were obtained from the assessment program with the aim of understanding the physical condition of temporary wetlands and the patterns and processes shaping the biota of temporary wetlands in the Pangani River Basin. Thus, providing the baseline information needed to formulate conservation and management frameworks for the sustainable management of temporary wetlands in the region. In total, the dataset covers the period between April 14, 2017 and April 17, 2017 and contains 126 occurrence records belonging to 8 orders, 21 families, and 31 genera. Given that Pangani River basin is of high ecological importance to the region (PBWO/IUCN, 2007); renowned for high species richness and endemism across multiple taxonomic groups (VPO, 2015; Seeteram et al., 2019). Therefore, access to reliable, and ready to use freshwater biodiversity data is vital to guide policy formulation and decision-making processes for sustainable utilization and management of the basin. Mobilization and preparation of this dataset was funded by JRS Biodiversity Foundation through Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and Biodiversity Information for Development programme.</para>" ;

dct:title "Benthic Macroinvertebrates of Pangani River Basin, northeastern Tanzania" ;
dct:description """<para>Located along the slopes of the highest mountain in Africa Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,985 m.a.s.l) and Mount Meru (4,566 m.a.s.l), Pangani River Basin is endowed with considerable freshwater resources that include lakes, rivers, wetlands, ponds, and man-made reservoirs (PBWO/IUCN, 2007a; IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Programme, 2009). The basin forms an important hotspot of freshwater biodiversity with an outstanding reservoir of freshwater plant and animal species (PBWO/IUCN, 2007b; URT, 2014; Seeteram et al., 2019). The Pangani River Basin covers approximately 43,650 km2, with 95% of this area being in Tanzania and the remainder in Kenya (PBWO/IUCN, 2007a; IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Programme, 2009). The basin is a home to Arusha national park, Kilimanjaro national park, Mkomazi national park, Amani Nature Reserve (Key Biodiversity Area) and the extensive Eastern Arc mountain forests (PBWO/IUCN, 2007b; URT, 2014).
Given that Pangani River basin is of high ecological importance to the region (PBWO/IUCN, 2007); renowned for high species richness and endemism across multiple taxonomic groups (VPO, 2015; Seeteram et al., 2019). Therefore, access to reliable, and ready to use freshwater biodiversity data is vital to guide policy formulation and decision-making processes for sustainable utilization and management of the freshwater resources in the basin.

This dataset presents data on the occurrence of freshwater macroinvertebrates from rivers and stream in the Pangani River Basin in the northeastern-Tanzania. The macroinvertebrates occurrence data were obtained from river assessment programs with the aim of assessing the ecological integrity of the Malala River, Tengeru River, Makumira River, Magadirisho River, Ghona River, Dehu River, Soko River, Ruvu River, Ngaresero River, Usa River, Maji ya chai River, Kikafu River, Rau River, Umbwe River, Karanga River, Weruweru River, and Lumbanga River of the Pangani River Basin (Mwaijengo et al., 2020). In total, the dataset covers the period between 2014 and 2018, and contains 18459 records and 71 observed (families). Since biological water-quality monitoring programs based on macroinvertebrates aim to assess the ecological water quality for decision-making, this dataset presents vital information for the conservation and management of river ecosystems in the northeastern Tanzanian region. The mobilization and preparation of this dataset was funded by JRS Biodiversity Foundation through Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).</para>""" ;

dct:description "<para>The database of Lepidoptera pollinator species of Tanzania is a newborn database which contains more than 1850 occurrence records of preserved specimens of Hesperiidae, Papilionidae and Sphingidae families stored at the National Museum of Tanzania. The database was developed through the JRS Biodiversity Foundation funded project in East Africa titled \" Assessment of Lepidoptera pollinator species diversity data in East Africa\". The project is a three year collaborative effort between Tanzania (NMT, COSTECH and UDSM), Kenya (National Museum of Kenya) and Uganda (Makerere University), which started in 2017. This dataset consists 638 occurrence records of Hesperiidae, 401 records of Papilionidae and 812 records of Sphingidae from preserved specimens collected from Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Rukwa, Kagera, Lindi, Tanga, Morogoro, Tabora and Geita regions between 1949 to 2017. dct:title "Occurrence and diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates in the Lake Manyara Basin, northern-Tanzania." ;
dct:description "<para>Covering approximately 6942 km2, Lake Manyara Basin in the northern-Tanzania is home to charismatic and unique flora and fauna. The basin is a corridor for wildlife constantly moving to and from Tarangire, Burunge and Lake Manyara National Parks (Ngana et al., 2004). The basin is also a home to the most biodiverse aquatic ecosystems including Mto wa Mbu River, Simba River, Kirurumo River, Msasa River, Endabashi River, Lyambi River, Magara River, and Makuyuni River, Lake Burunge, Lake Manyara and several permanent and temporary wetlands. Given that Lake Manyara Basin is of high socio-ecological importance to the region; renowned for high species richness and endemism across multiple taxonomic groups (VPO, 2015). Therefore, access to reliable, and ready-to-use freshwater biodiversity data is vital to guide policy formulation and decision-making processes for sustainable utilization and management of the basin’s freshwater biodiversity. This dataset presents data on the occurrence of freshwater macroinvertebrates from 4 rivers (River Iyambi, River Rohu, River Mto wa Mbu, River Babati), 1 permanent canal named Kissangeji and 60 temporary wetlands in the Lake Manyara Basin in the northern-Tanzania. In total, the dataset covers the period between 2019 and 2021, and contains (864 records and 727 observed taxa genera). The mobilization and preparation of this dataset were funded by JRS Biodiversity Foundation through Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and its Biodiversity Information for Development (BID).</para>" ;
